Synchronizing Fireflies Along Veraval Creek at Night in from a frost-hushed ridgeline near Veraval

Synchronizing Fireflies Along Veraval Creek at Night

by Heather Thornton

Moonlight falls through a thin atmospheric haze, illuminating a dark creek bank where hundreds of fireflies pulse in rhythmic unison. The cool season air hangs heavy, suggested by the crisp clarity of the glowing insects against the shadowed vegetation. Dramatic, dark clouds loom overhead, partially obscuring the moon but allowing beams of silver light to cut through the mist. The fireflies create a living, undulating ribbon of amber light that follows the curve of the water's edge. Their synchronized flashes stand out sharply against the deep greens and blacks of the frost-hushed ridgeline near Veraval. A reflection of the pulsing lights shimmers briefly on the dark, still surface of the creek before fading into the shadow of the bank.
