Antarctic Research Station Canada Blue Hour Thaw
by Irene Kent
Modular white structures with red trim stand against a deep indigo sky at the edge of a thawing ice field. The buildings sit on raised stilts above melting snow that pools into dark, reflective water. Bright orange safety lights glow from the station windows, casting sharp, electric reflections across the wet surface below. Early spring light leaves the horizon in a soft, violet gradient while the sky above remains perfectly clear and starless. Heavy ice chunks rest against the foundation walls, showing signs of recent movement. A metal walkway connects two modules, its railing slick with meltwater. The red warning lights on the roof edges create a rhythmic pattern against the cool blue tones of the evening. Shadows stretch long and thin across the frozen ground, ending abruptly at the water's edge where the reflection begins.
