Copper Light Over Qamishli Salt Ponds

by Reginald Smith

From a high vantage point, a grid of salt ponds and narrow causeways stretches across the landscape near Qamishli. The low sun casts a heavy copper tone over the water, turning shallow pools into sheets of molten metal. Ripples distort the reflection as wind whips across the surface, creating a textured pattern of silver and orange. The causeways appear as dark, dry lines dividing the flooded rectangles, their surfaces rough and cracked with dried salt deposits. Shadows lengthen sharply across the flat terrain, showing the geometric precision of the man-made waterways. The sky above remains a pale, fading blue, against the warm, glowing earth below. At the edge of the frame, a small cluster of reeds bends in the breeze, marking the boundary between the cultivated ponds and the wilder marshland.
