Abandoned Fishing Village Courtyard Reclaimed by Grasses

by Jean Satterfield

Dry mountain light floods a weathered courtyard where tall grasses surge through cracked concrete slabs. The remains of a fishing village structure stand empty, their walls stripped of paint and plaster, revealing rough brick and crumbling mortar beneath. Wind pushes invisible currents through open doorways and broken windows, rippling the green stalks that have taken root in the debris. Late summer heat lingers on the stone surfaces, baking the earth tones of the ruins against the vibrant, swaying vegetation. A low wall frames the background, separating the overgrown interior from the rocky coast beyond. Sharp shadows from the grass blades fall across the floor, ending at the edge of a shattered ceramic tile half-buried in the soil.
