Yellow Sulfur Fumarole Switzerland Late Afternoon in in Switzerland

Yellow Sulfur Fumarole Switzerland Late Afternoon

by Alexandra Mays

Vibrant yellow sulfur crusts coat the jagged, dark volcanic rock of a fumarole vent in the Swiss Alps. Low-hanging clouds drift just above the ground, softening the late afternoon light that washes over the mineral deposits. The stone surface appears rough and weathered, carved by persistent winds that have stripped away softer layers. Puddles of rainwater reflect the pale gray sky in the crevices between the rocks. A thin wisp of steam rises slowly from the central opening, blending into the mist. The yellow pigment stains the surrounding gray slate in irregular, crusty patches that catch the dimming sun. Dark shadows pool in the deep fissures of the vent, against the bright mineral edges.
