Aerial view of smoking volcanic vent in snowfield near La Paz
by Dwight Burke
Steam rises vertically from a dark fissure in the snow, drifting into the low-hanging clouds that blanket the high Andean plateau. The vent sits in a stark white field of late spring snow, contrasting sharply with the black volcanic rock and the grey vapor. Below, terraced hillsides stretch toward the distant horizon, their geometric lines softened by the altitude. Golden hour light bathes the scene in a warm, low-angle glow, illuminating the edges of the clouds and casting long shadows across the undulating terrain. The perspective looks directly down, showing the isolation of the vent against the vast, pale landscape. Wisps of smoke curl upward, merging with the mist that obscures the valley floor. A sharp ridge of dark rock defines the edge of the crater, at the base of the scene in its rugged, high-altitude reality.
