Wet Signal Gantry in Dry Mountain Light in beneath transmission towers near Hadejia

Wet Signal Gantry in Dry Mountain Light

by Jolene Murillo

A steel signal gantry stands rigid beneath massive transmission towers, its surface coated in a slick mixture of wet mist and dark diesel soot. The late afternoon sun cuts through a thin layer of dry fog, casting sharp, high-contrast shadows across the rusted metal framework. The dry season air leaves the surrounding ground dusty and pale, while the wet patches on the gantry reflect the clear sky above. Symmetrical lines of the structure lead toward the center, showing the civic austerity of the infrastructure. Dark streaks of soot run vertically down the beams, against the bright, dry light that illuminates the scene. A small puddle forms at the base of the nearest support leg, mirroring the gray steel above.
