Mast Ladder Cage Rising Through Bog Cotton Fog in beneath transmission towers near Gitega

Mast Ladder Cage Rising Through Bog Cotton Fog

by Karl McCormick

Pale green stems of bog cotton cluster densely at the base of a steel ladder cage, their soft, white tufts against the cold gray metal rungs. The cage ascends vertically, disappearing into a thin layer of light fog that softens the distant transmission towers. Tropical bright light falls through the mist, casting sharp, high-contrast shadows on the wet ground. The converging lines of the ladder guide the eye upward toward the vanishing point beneath the massive lattice structures. Cool season air settles over the damp earth, where the vegetation rests on the foundation of the infrastructure. A drop of condensation hangs from the lowest metal rung, reflecting the pale sky above.
