Tropical Fish Swim Through Clinic Air
by Marco Lamb
Stainless steel and translucent plastic define the warming cabinet standing against a wall in a Fuzhou exam room. Late afternoon light falls through sheer curtains, casting soft geometric shadows across the floor where paper charts rest on a counter. Lamplight pools in the corners, highlighting the crisp white of a patient gown inside the cabinet. Labels and printed text on the paper files remain sharp and readable. Suspended at head height, a school of bright orange and blue tropical fish swims through the clear air. The fish move in a synchronized loop around the cabinet, their fins cutting through the dust-mote-filled light. Their scales reflect the warm glow of the corner lamps, creating a surreal contrast against the clinical gray surfaces. One shadow of a fish falls across the white paper chart, at the base of the impossible motion in the room's geometry.
