Triggerfish Guarding Nest on Museum Plinth

by Devin Ashley

Soft tungsten light spills from above, illuminating a sculpted triggerfish perched over a circular depression in the sand. The fish, rendered in textured ceramic or resin, faces outward with fins slightly raised as if in mid-guard. The sand beneath is fine-grained, raked into a smooth crater that mimics a marine nesting site. Surrounding the plinth, deep shadows rest on the museum walls, suggesting the predawn hours of a monsoon night in Kuala Lumpur. The plinth surface is polished dark stone, against the pale, dry sand of the nest. Along the edges of the display, the light fades into the darkness, leaving the perimeter of the room obscured. A faint reflection of the fish's underbelly glimmers on the wet stone rim of the plinth base.
