Glowing Chameleon on Kuala Lumpur Ridge in on a wind-scoured ridge near Kuala Lumpur

Glowing Chameleon on Kuala Lumpur Ridge

by Armando Lamb

A chameleon perches on a jagged, wind-scoured ridge overlooking the humid outskirts of Kuala Lumpur. Its skin ripples with shifting hues of burnt orange and deep teal, reacting to the dry season air. An impossible internal light pulses from the creature's torso, casting a soft, golden radiance that illuminates the rough texture of the bark beneath its claws. The light has no visible source, yet it brightens the immediate surroundings while the rest of the ridge fades into the early evening shadows. Reflected light from a distant body of water creates a cool blue sheen on the chameleon's back, against the warm glow. The animal remains perfectly still, a patient predator in the coastal twilight. One scale on its flank catches the internal light, glowing like a tiny ember against the darkening rock.
