Late Summer Bonsai in Black Forest Shrine Alcove
by Ross Hickman
Deep emerald moss carpets the rough stone floor of a wooden shrine alcove nestled in the Black Forest. A meticulously pruned bonsai tree sits centered on a dark, weathered stand, its twisted trunk anchoring the composition. Late afternoon light falls through the dense canopy above, casting shifting patches of brightness and shadow across the gnarled bark and vibrant green foliage. Heavy gray clouds loom just beyond the visible tree line, diffusing the sun into a soft, even glow that highlights the texture of the aged wood grain. The framing is tight, using the dark wooden beams of the alcove to enclose the small tree, emphasizing its stillness against the vast, overgrown forest backdrop. One shadow from a lower branch falls sharply across the moss, at the base of the sacred object in the earth.
