Pigeons Circling Abandoned Observatory Dome Sikkim in beneath a broken stone arch in Sikkim

Pigeons Circling Abandoned Observatory Dome Sikkim

by Marlene Holloway

Thick midsummer mist rests on the broken stone arch framing the view, softening the rugged textures of the ancient masonry. Through the natural opening, an abandoned observatory dome stands in shadow, its metal surface dull against the fading light. The slit in the dome releases a stream of pigeons, their grey wings catching the warm glow of firelight that spills from the ground below. This artificial warmth contrasts with the cool grey of the stone and the encroaching twilight. The birds move in a tight, rhythmic loop, their dark silhouettes sharp against the glowing haze. Dust motes swirl in the light beam, highlighting the rough, weathered edges of the archway. One pigeon rests on the curved rim of the dome, its feathers ruffled by the still, heavy air.
