Leaning Iron Pillars in Slovenian Ruin

by Dixie Gonzales

Pale green light fog drifts through the open nave of a roofless bandstand in early spring Slovenia. Wrought-iron pillars, rusted to a deep orange-brown, lean heavily against one another, their decorative scrolls twisted by time. The ground inside is a patchwork of wet mud and sparse, pale grass shoots pushing through the decay. Sunlight breaks through the thin mist, casting sharp, high-contrast shadows from the leaning metal onto the damp earth. The structure stands alone, its missing roof exposing the sky above to the tropical bright afternoon. A jagged piece of broken concrete rests near the base of the nearest pillar, catching a glint of white light.
