Supercell Lightning Over Libyan Coast in in Libya

Supercell Lightning Over Libyan Coast

by Liliana Forbes

Hard coastal glare illuminates a massive supercell thunderhead hovering over the Libyan shoreline under a perfectly clear early summer sky. The storm interior glows with faint, branching lightning flashes that pierce the darkening cloud base. Below, the calm sea surface acts as a precise mirror, duplicating the towering structure of the storm and its internal electrical sparks in a symmetrical composition. The horizon line cuts sharply through the center, separating the azure water from the deepening grey of the storm. Tiny whitecaps glitter on the waves, reflecting the harsh midday sun that still dominates the upper atmosphere. One bolt of blue-white light strikes deep within the cloud mass, casting a brief, cool illumination on the water's edge.
