Lightning Crawler Storm Botswana Horizon in over a horizon of stacked thunderheads in Botswana

Lightning Crawler Storm Botswana Horizon

by Larry Kaufman

A jagged seam of electric blue light snakes horizontally across a wall of stacked thunderheads above the Botswana horizon. The storm front dominates the upper frame, its base heavy and dark gray while the tops catch the harsh midday sun in sharp white highlights. Dry mountain light cuts through a thin layer of light fog near the ground, softening the transition between the distant landscape and the turbulent sky. The horizon line remains distinct, separating the pale, dusty earth from the brooding clouds. A faint purple tint lingers in the lower cloud layers, against the bright, clear air above the storm. The lightning forms a distinct, branching network that glows against the darker gray of the cloud mass, illuminating the texture of the storm's underbelly.
