Surreal Succulents Blooming from Concrete in Niger Sunset

by Sofia Johnson

Rich amber light from a low sunset washes over a metal tray holding dense clusters of pale green succulents. The tray rests on a weathered concrete slab at the edge of a salt-sprayed cliff in Niger. Behind the tray, heavy gray overcast clouds press low against the horizon, creating a stark contrast with the warm glow. The impossible element emerges as vibrant pink and orange flowers erupt violently from hairline cracks in the gray concrete beneath the tray. Roots twist visibly through the fissures, anchoring the blooms to the hard surface. Layers of depth recede into the distance where the cliff face drops away into a hazy, indistinct void. One bright petal catches the amber light on the rough edge of the metal tray.
