Succulents in Terracotta Pots on Belem Cliff

by Rose Kane

Flat noon glare flattens the texture of weathered terracotta pots lined along a salt-sprayed stone ledge. Thick, fleshy succulent leaves in muted greens and dusty purples press against the rough, porous clay. The ground below holds a layer of suspended dust that catches the intense light, blurring the base of the cliff. Salt crystals glint on the stone surface where the pots rest, marking the proximity of the ocean. Shadows fall sharply beneath each pot, creating distinct dark bands on the pale rock. The plants stand rigid against the wind, their surfaces coated in a fine, dry film. One crack in the terracotta rim reveals the dry earth inside.
