Agave Flower Stalk Reflected in Sulawesi Water

by Andrew Barber

Pale green leaves of an agave century plant spread across dry, dusty earth in Sulawesi. A towering flower stalk rises vertically, its pale yellow bracts tightly clustered against the humid air. Late afternoon light bounces off a nearby body of water, casting a soft, shimmering glow that highlights the texture of the succulent leaves. The ground shows cracks from the dry season, against the moisture hanging in the air after rain. The reflection in the water below mirrors the stalk's height, creating a symmetrical line that ends abruptly at the water's edge. One droplet rests on the tip of a lower leaf, catching the reflected light.
