Cooling Tower Reflected in Pond at Dawn

by Felix Larson

Deep shadow swallows the foreground where a still pond mirrors the massive concrete hyperboloid of a nuclear cooling tower. Rim light traces the upper curves of the structure against a sky heavy with dramatic, layered clouds. The water surface remains perfectly flat, duplicating the tower's ribbed texture and the dark gray tones of the pre-dawn sky. Across the site, industrial fencing and low structures fade into the gloom. The turn of the season shows itself in the bare, dormant grass along the pond's edge, against the smooth, cold concrete. A sharp line of reflected light marks the horizon where the water meets the distant worksite.
