Steel-blue twilight settles over terraced rice paddies near Warnes, where a dark storm front advances from the horizon. Low clouds press down on the green and gold rows of crops, casting a uniform, cool shadow across the wet earth. Fine chaff and dust drift in the stagnant air, caught in the dim light before the rain begins. The stepped fields curve gently, holding pools of water that reflect the heavy sky. Mud tracks cut through the vegetation, leading toward the distant ridge where the storm wall rises. One clump of wheat stalks bends slightly in the pre-storm stillness, their tips trembling against the darkening backdrop.
