Bent Rice Seedlings in Evening Storm Light in at the edge of a tea plantation in West Bengal

Bent Rice Seedlings in Evening Storm Light

by Carl Blake

Darkened earth and puddled ruts define the foreground where water reflects the last honeyed light of a wet season evening. Green rice seedlings bow heavily under the weight of recent rain, their tips dipping toward the shallow, mirror-like surface. The water holds a distorted image of the stormy sky, breaking the horizon into shifting patches of gray and gold. Along the edge of the field, the soil appears saturated and deep brown, against the vibrant, waterlogged green of the young stalks. The low angle emphasizes the bending stems against the fading sky, showing the stillness of the season. A small puddle near the bottom edge reflects a sharp, inverted line of a distant tree branch.
