Rice Paddy Bridge Over Water at Dusk

by Natalia Andrade

Steel-blue twilight washes the rice paddy, turning the water into a dark mirror reflecting the low sky. A narrow wooden footbridge spans the flooded field, its planks worn smooth by wet feet. Several marker flags in red and yellow flutter vigorously along the bridge railing, caught in the monsoon wind. To the left, a row of stacked hay bales rises against the water's edge, their golden fibers against the cool ambient light. A layer of distant haze settles low on the horizon, softening the outline of the far bank. The water ripples gently around the bridge supports, creating small, dark distortions in the reflection. One yellow flag tip dips slightly into the shadow of the railing.
