Wheat and Canola Under Storm Shadows Dawn in through low marine fog near Phnom Penh

Wheat and Canola Under Storm Shadows Dawn

by Julian Middleton

Cold silver dawn light falls through heavy overcast skies, casting long, soft shadows across a patchwork of wheat and canola fields. The crops stand in a rhythmic grid, their golden and green stalks muted by the low marine fog rolling near Phnom Penh. Dark storm clouds gather overhead, pressing down on the horizon and silhouetting the tall plants against the pale, diffused glow. The texture of the grain is rough and dense, against the smooth, hazy expanse of the sky. A narrow dirt path cuts through the lower left corner, disappearing into the mist. The edge of a field marker post, weathered gray, stands slightly tilted against the fading light.
