Stone Facade in Luxor

by Stefan Cuevas

First light diffuses through a heavy post-rain haze over the East Bank of Luxor, washing the limestone facades in a pale, wet gray. A worker in a faded blue galabeya stands on a wooden scaffold, pressure-washing the sandstone below, the spray catching the dim light as it falls. Above him, a thick cluster of magenta bougainvillea spills over a wrought-iron balcony, its saturated petals stark against the monochrome stone. Below, the street is slick with rainwater, reflecting the dull sky and the red taillights of a distant microbus.
