Lotus Buds in Luxor in in Luxor, Egypt

Lotus Buds in Luxor

by Michelle Cline

The heavy dusk light of Luxor softens into a damp grey as fine rain slicks the limestone facade of a traditional mud-brick home near the Nile. A shopkeeper, hooded against the chill, stands under the overhang of a doorway, carefully arranging a cluster of dried papyrus reeds on a low wooden counter. Beside the reeds, a small glass vase holds a few fresh lotus buds, their pink petals beaded with rainwater, offering a stark, vibrant contrast to the weathered ochre walls. String lights, unlit and dormant, hang limp above, while steam from a nearby tea stall curls invisibly into the cold air, condensing on the glass pane of a neighboring window.
