Rain-soaked Alley in Luxor in in Luxor, Egypt

Rain-soaked Alley in Luxor

by Haley Friedman

First light after rain in Luxor reveals a narrow alley where wet limestone walls reflect the grey sky. A makeshift clothesline strung between crumbling mud-brick buildings holds damp white sheets, their edges dripping onto the slick pavement below. In the foreground, a local workbench sits under an overhang, its rough wooden surface pooled with clear rainwater that catches the pale morning glow. One, bright yellow lemon rests on the edge, its textured skin against the smooth, wet wood. Nearby, a stack of glazed ceramic plates, likely majolica, leans against a stack of biscuit tins, their colors muted by the overcast light.
