Chair Leg in Luxor

by Christine Riley

First light after rain washes over the East Bank of Luxor, turning the dusty limestone of a riverside workshop into a pale, cool grey. A local artisan sits on a low wooden stool, his back to the camera, carefully sanding a wooden chair leg. The wet pavement reflects the soft, diffused sky, while puddles gather in the grooves of the uneven stone floor. On a nearby workbench, a glass sugar jar sits half-filled with coarse salt, catching the faint ambient light. A few pigeon feathers lie scattered near the threshold, blown in by the morning breeze.
