Selling Fruit in Luxor

by Colin Stevenson

Rain-slicked limestone walls of a Luxor street reflect the fading dusk light, turning the pavement into a mirror of amber and grey. A vendor’s cart, sheltered by a faded blue tarp, holds a stack of white ceramic saucers and a glass pickle jar, their surfaces beaded with fresh raindrops. The vendor, wrapped in a dark galabeya, leans over the cart, using a wooden ruler to measure slices of ripe mango from a nearby fruit crate. The bright orange of the fruit contrasts sharply with the wet, dusty stone of the ancient city backdrop. One laundry pin hangs from the tarp’s edge, catching a glint of the last ambient light.
