Stone Archway Over Olive Grove Storm Light

Reclaimed grasses grow thick within a weathered stone courtyard near Mission San Francisco, framing a crumbling doorway that opens onto an olive grove. The sky above is a perfectly clear, flat blue, yet soft overcast light diffuses the scene, eliminating harsh shadows. Dry season grasses turn golden-brown around the base of the arch, against the cool grey of the eroded masonry. Through the rectangular opening, rows of gnarled olive trees stand in the distance, their silver-green leaves catching the even daylight. The stone surface shows deep cracks and patches of lichen, marking years of exposure to coastal air. A shadow from the arch's lintel falls straight down onto the threshold, at the base of the structure in the bright noon sun.
