Cool gray mist hangs low over cracked, dried mud and a shallow pool of floodwater reflecting the pale pre-dawn sky. A heavy-duty levee patrol truck sits parked beside the water, its dark metal body absorbing the diffused morning light. Above, the massive steel cables of a cable-stayed bridge in Erbil stretch across the frame, their lines converging toward the horizon. Late autumn leaves in muted browns and ochres litter the muddy banks near the vehicle. The ground shows deep fissures where the earth has shrunk, against the still water. One puddle at the truck's rear tire reflects the faint blue of the sky and the steel structure above.
