Silhouette Stick Insect Evening Reed Bed in at the edge of a reed bed in Canada

Silhouette Stick Insect Evening Reed Bed

by Keith Briggs

Dark fog rolls over the edge of a Canadian reed bed as the last blue light of early summer evening fades. A stick insect stands perfectly motionless on a slender twig, its body rendered as a sharp black silhouette against the dimming sky. The insect's legs grip the plant stem with unyielding tension, mirroring the rigid vertical lines of the surrounding reeds that fade into the mist. Soft, diffused light wraps around the edges of the foliage, creating a faint halo effect while the insect remains a void of shadow. The stillness of the air is visible in the lack of movement among the grass blades. The insect's segmented form aligns precisely with the twig, ending in a tiny, pointed tip that disappears into the gray haze.
