Sugar Cane Stalks in Denver Twilight Forest in on a fern-lined forest floor near LoDo, Denver

Sugar Cane Stalks in Denver Twilight Forest

by Lindsay Knox

Tall green sugar cane stalks rise from a fern-lined forest floor, their vertical forms creating a dense wall of vegetation. Deep indigo twilight shadows swallow the lower sections of the field, while a sharp rim light catches the upper edges of the stalks, defining their jagged silhouettes against the darkening sky. Heat haze shimmers above the ground, blurring the transition between the ferns and the distant stalks. Layers of depth recede into the background, where the forest edge dissolves into the indigo gloom. The dry season leaves the ferns brittle and brown at the tips, against the vibrant green of the cane. A faint reflection of the rim light glimmers on a wet fern leaf in the immediate foreground.
