Hedgehog foraging under light fog
by Lois Ochoa
A pale beam of lighthouse-sweep illumination cuts through deep night fog, revealing a small hedgehog moving across wet stones beside a glacial stream. The water flows with a milky turquoise hue, reflecting the stark white light that slices horizontally across the dark water. To the right, a mature tree extends its leafy branches perfectly horizontal from a rough stone wall, defying gravity while maintaining healthy green foliage against the midnight backdrop. The hedgehog pauses, its spines catching the sharp edge of the light, while mist rests on the low-hanging leaves of the impossible tree. The ground remains damp and dark, save for the bright, fleeting strip of illumination that highlights the creature and the surreal flora. One dewdrop hangs from the tip of a horizontal leaf, trembling in the still air.
