Sculpin Ambush in Castro Tide Pool Evening

by Kim Roberson

Steel-blue ambient light floods a shallow tide pool along the cold-water reef edge near Castro, San Francisco. A sculpin fish presses its mottled, textured body against the rocky substrate, its fins splayed in perfect camouflage. Suspended particles glitter like scattered diamond dust within the water column, catching the fading late summer light. The fish remains motionless, its mouth slightly agape as it targets a small shrimp nearby. Ripples distort the reflection of the sky on the water's surface. Tiny bubbles rest on the rough algae coating the pool's rim. One grain of sand rests against the sculpin's scaled flank.
