Rusted Whaling Station in Texas Ruins

by Madelyn Pacheco

Honeyed evening light spills across the skeletal remains of a whaling station, where flensing platforms now lie as jagged, rusted metal against the Texas soil. Toppled stone columns rise from thick patches of purple and green nettles, their fractured surfaces catching the warm glow of firelight warmth. Dramatic clouds stack heavily in the sky above, casting long, shifting shadows that stretch across the uneven ground. The rusted steel beams form strong leading lines that guide the gaze toward the decaying structures in the distance. Fallen leaves scatter over the metal grates, their orange and brown hues mirroring the autumn sky. A thick layer of orange oxidation coats the edge of a broken platform, revealing the raw iron beneath.
