Rusted Whaling Station Through Rainy Winter Frame in through an abandoned ceremonial court in South Carolina

Rusted Whaling Station Through Rainy Winter Frame

by Mackenzie Rasmussen

Pale gray light falls through a canopy of bare winter branches, illuminating the corroded steel frames of a derelict whaling station. The flensing platforms, once functional metal slabs, lie sagging under sheets of orange rust and patches of green moss. Rainwater beads on the jagged edges of the iron, dripping steadily onto the wet, gray concrete floor of the ceremonial court below. Overgrown kudzu vines creep up the rusted pillars, their dull green leaves resting against the oxidized metal. The sky remains a uniform sheet of pale cloud, casting an even, diffused illumination across the damp surfaces. A rusted bolt protrudes from a fractured beam, catching the light as a tiny, sharp highlight against the matte decay.
