Ruined Fountain Courtyard Overgrown in Cuba

by Terry Guthrie

Green vines and ferns swallow the crumbling stone basin of a roofless fountain standing in a wide courtyard near Ciego de Ávila. Thick vegetation carpets the ground, rising over broken tiles and moss-covered masonry under a heavy, grey wet-season sky. Dappled light falls through the dense canopy above, creating shifting patches of brightness on the wet, dark stone surfaces. The ruin lacks a roof, exposing the inner chamber to the overcast sky while surrounding trees press in from all sides. A jagged fragment of white plaster lies half-buried in the mud near the fountain's edge, against the deep emerald of the encroaching jungle.
