Rocking Chair in Havana in in Havana, Cuba

Rocking Chair in Havana

by Brian Everett

Under the harsh, shadowless glare of midday sun, a weathered wooden rocking chair sits abandoned on the cracked concrete sidewalk outside a fading colonial building in Havana. The chair’s slats are bleached white by years of exposure, contrasting sharply with the vibrant, peeling turquoise paint of the adjacent shuttered window frame. One, frayed wool scarf in muted indigo hangs loosely from one armrest, caught in the stagnant heat, while a small, tarnished silver brooch glints faintly where it has slipped into the weave. The street behind is empty and bleached out, showing the isolation of the furniture, with the rough texture of the aged plaster wall providing a gritty backdrop to the delicate, out-of-place textile and metal details.
