Roman Aqueduct Over Canal Lock in Blue Hour Fog in at a canal lock chamber near Zaria

Roman Aqueduct Over Canal Lock in Blue Hour Fog

by Adeline Wright

Deep indigo twilight settles over the wet concrete of a canal lock chamber near Zaria. The massive arches of a Roman aqueduct span the water, their rough stone texture catching the faint glow of nearby utility lights. Ground fog pools in the low corners of the lock, thick and white against the dark water. The arches create strong leading lines that draw toward the vanishing point. Damp surfaces reflect the soft blue sky, while the stone remains cool and shadowed. The structure stands with practical grandeur, its ancient form juxtaposed against the functional metal gates of the lock. One rivulet of water slides down the curved face of the nearest pillar, catching the light before disappearing into the mist below.
