Roman Aqueduct Over Green Valley at Dusk in beside a storm surge barrier in Innsbruck

Roman Aqueduct Over Green Valley at Dusk

by Maureen Figueroa

Steel-blue ambient light washes over a massive stone aqueduct stretching across a lush, green valley floor. Low-hanging clouds press close to the ancient arches, softening the edges of the masonry. To the right, a modern storm surge barrier rises in concrete and steel, its industrial lines against the weathered texture of the Roman stonework. Late spring foliage blankets the slope beneath the structure, displaying vibrant shades of emerald and lime. The sky holds a deep, uniform hue of twilight without a single star. Shadows lengthen across the grassy embankment, at the base of the massive infrastructure in the valley. at the edge is the rough, pitted surface of a single stone block where the light fades into the shadow of the arch.
