Roaring Dam Spillway Honeyed Evening Light Sigiriya in beside a hydroelectric intake in Sigiriya

Roaring Dam Spillway Honeyed Evening Light Sigiriya

by Jesse French

Honeyed evening light wraps the converging concrete lines of a massive hydroelectric spillway in Sigiriya. White water roars violently from the intake, churning into a frothy cascade that contrasts sharply with the cool, dry stone surrounding it. Heavy rain has swollen the flow, creating a dense mist that hangs low over the rushing surface. Beside the churning water, industrial transformers and cables stand in stark, civic austerity, their metal surfaces reflecting the low horizon glow. The cool season air settles over the landscape, leaving the stone surfaces dry and textured against the wet, chaotic energy of the spillway. Shadows lengthen across the concrete floor, showing the depth of the channel as it leads toward a distant vanishing point where the water disappears into the valley.
