Pileus Cloud Over Thunderhead in South Dakota Fog

by Adelaide Carr

The deep indigo glow of evening backlights a towering thunderhead rising from the prairie, capped by a smooth, white pileus cloud that resembles a helmet. Low marine fog blankets the foreground, softening the base of the storm and merging with the golden-brown grasses of peak autumn. Dark leaves skitter across the ground in gusts, their movement visible against the dimming light. The storm structure stands in sharp silhouette, its anvil spreading wide against the fading blue sky. Shadows stretch long across the flat terrain, showing the vertical scale of the cloud formation. At the bottom edge, a cluster of dry tumbleweeds rests against the fog line, at the base of the massive weather event in the immediate landscape.
