Four monks in deep maroon robes kneel on a paved public square in Pali, their hands moving with precision over a complex geometric pattern of colored sand. The ground beneath them is a stark grey, against the vibrant reds, yellows, and blues of the intricate design taking shape. Overcast skies diffuse the midmorning light, casting soft, even shadows that reveal the texture of the granular sand without harsh highlights. The monks wear heavy woolen garments suitable for the dead of winter, their hoods pulled up against the chill. The composition is tight and eye-level, focusing entirely on the synchronized motion of their fingers and the symmetry of the mandala. A small metal funnel rests on the pavement beside the monk on the right, filled with fine grains waiting to be poured.
