Snowplow on Black Lava Field Near Quito

by Graham Curry

A heavy yellow snowplow cuts across a jagged field of black volcanic rock under the low angle of early evening sun. The machine dominates the lower right third, its blade pushed against a drift of white snow that contrasts sharply with the dark, porous lava. Distant town lights begin to glow in a soft orange haze along the horizon, marking the approach to Quito. The wind whips loose snow across the rough, uneven surface, creating streaks of white motion against the static stone. Shadows stretch long and sharp across the terrain, showing the texture of the cooled lava. A fresh trail of cleared rock glistens where the plow has just passed, revealing the dark, glassy crust beneath.
