First Light on Glacier River Thimphu Floodplain

by Nathan McMillan

Pale turquoise water snakes across a vast expanse of black volcanic sand, its surface rippled by a gentle morning breeze. Low-hanging clouds drift just above the horizon, softening the transition between the dark ground and the brightening sky. First light from the rising sun strikes the water's edge, creating a thin, shimmering line of silver that separates the cold river from the matte, grainy texture of the sand. The landscape stretches wide and empty, showing no footprints or debris, only the raw geology of the floodplain. In the distance, faint outlines of mountains emerge from the mist, their peaks still hidden. One ripple moves downstream, breaking the perfect stillness of the water's reflection.
