Monk Pouring Sand Mandala by Faizabad River

by Lloyd Escobar

Late summer heat shimmers off the riverbank near Faizabad, distorting the air around a seated monk in saffron robes. He leans forward, fingers guiding a small metal funnel to pour vibrant red and yellow sand onto the river water, dissolving the intricate geometric mandala he spent days creating. The bright midday sun casts sharp, short shadows beneath his knees, highlighting the rough texture of the dry earth against the smooth, flowing current. Beside him, a woven basket holds the remaining colored sands, its fibers catching the light. The final grains drift away, leaving ripples that blur the sacred pattern into the muddy water.
