Monk pours sand into canal before dusk

Thick monsoon mist hangs low over the water, softening the distant banks of the canal in Aba. Copper-toned light from the setting sun cuts through the haze, illuminating the rough texture of a monk's saffron robe. From an over-the-shoulder perspective, a hand guides a small vessel, releasing a stream of colored sand that arcs through the air. The grains fall in a fine, chaotic cloud, catching the low light as they descend toward the dark, rippling surface. Long shadows stretch across the wet stone edge, where the sand begins to dissolve into the canal water. One grain of crimson sand settles on a dark, wet stone at the water's edge.
