Golden Light on Buddhist Sand Painting in Guatemala Hall

Molten amber light floods the ceremonial hall in Guatemala City, illuminating a sprawling Buddhist sand mandala in progress. Monks in saffron and maroon robes kneel on the stone floor, their hands moving with precision over the intricate geometric design. Colored sands of deep red, lapis blue, and burnt orange form complex patterns against the polished concrete. Outside the high arched windows, a light drizzle blurs the city skyline, casting soft reflections on the wet pavement. The turn of seasons brings a humid stillness to the air, visible in the way the dust motes settle on the sand. One bead of water rests on the edge of a metal cone, ready to release its contents into the sacred design.
