Monk Destroys Sand Mandala Dawn Light

Warm candlelight illuminates the focused face of a Buddhist monk in maroon robes as he pours colored sand from a brass funnel onto a crumbling geometric pattern. The intricate sand mandala lies on a woven mat spread across the rough stone floor of a weathered room in the old quarter of Machakos. Rain streaks the single high window, blurring the dramatic gray clouds visible outside against the deepening pre-dawn sky. Dust motes hang suspended in the golden glow of the oil lamps. The monk's hands move with deliberate precision, scattering grains of blue, red, and gold onto the earth. A final pile of multicolored sand rests in a small brass bowl beside the scattered remnants of the sacred design.
